An issue that arises is to what extent intonational differences may lead to misinterpretation across varieties of the same language. We examined the perception of statements and questions in Markina Basque by native speakers, speakers of other Basque dialects, and L1 Spanish/L2 Basque speakers. We selected 8 texts, four multi-phrase and four single-phrase. The pitch contours of these recordings were also manipulated. MB speakers were significantly more accurate in their interpretation of the unmanipulated and manipulated stimuli than the other two groups.
