However, there is still significant opportunity for improvement of lead-acid battery technology. Typically, lead-acid batteries do not make use of more than 25-35 % of their active materials. To date, there have been few reports of techniques for monitoring of the internal processes which occur during operation of lead-acid batteries. Neutron imaging presents a novel technique for in operando monitoring of lead-acid batteries; however, it requires an appropriately designed lead-acid battery. The neutron beam has to pass through the battery without attenuation, carrying information about the inner components.
